The tendency to set excessively high standards for oneself and others is perfectionism. This is a personality trait, not a mental health issue. Perfectionist people, however, have a higher risk of developing mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and eating. It can also lead to increased stress and lowered self-worth. Perfectionism is characterized by fear of failure, self-criticism, obsession, reassurance-seeking, and unattainable goals. In serving the Lord, Martha probably struggled with perfectionism as she was "worried and upset about many things" (Luke 10:40-41). She wanted everything to be perfect as she prepared dinner and set the table. The problem was that she had a higher standard for herself than Jesus did. Jesus told her that only one thing was needed. He then pointed her to Mary's example of PEACE and REST (Luke 10:42).
