L'histoire célèbre les victoires que les médecins ont remportées sur les maladies. Mais elle néglige leurs patients dont les troubles, les souffrances ou les plaintes ont inauguré de nouveaux diagnostics, remis en cause certaines théories médicales ou ouvert des perspectives thérapeutiques inédites. Ciselés comme des nouvelles, ces récits de patients zéro racontent une autre histoire de la médecine : une histoire "par en bas", dans laquelle des malades qui parfois s'ignorent et des patients comptés trop souvent pour zéro prennent la place des mandarins et des héros.

La plupart sont oubliés ou méconnus, comme Auguste Deter, qui fit la renommée d'Aloïs Alzheimer, Mary Mallon, la plus saine des porteurs sains, qui ne souffrit jamais de la typhoïde qu'elle dissémina autour d'elle, ou Henrietta Lacks, atteinte d'un cancer foudroyant, dont les cellules dotées d'un pouvoir de prolifération exceptionnel éveillèrent la quête du gène de l'immortalité en voyageant autour du monde. À travers eux, ce livre audio interroge les errements, les excès et les dérives de la médecine d'hier à aujourd'hui.
Des origines foraines de l'anesthésie générale aux recherches génétiques ou neurobiologiques les plus actuelles en passant par les premières expériences de réassignation sexuelle, il tente de rendre justice aux miraculés, aux cobayes ou aux martyrs dont la contribution au progrès de la connaissance et du soin a été aussi importante que celle de leurs médecins, illustres ou non.
