Historia
Autism therapy typically focuses on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms such as difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. Now Dr. Barry M. Prizant offers a new and compelling paradigm: The most successful approaches to autism don’t aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual’s experience and what underlies the behavior. Rather than curb these behaviors, it’s better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer supports.

In this book Dr. Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a board-certified Behaviour Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it.

In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

We can not raise a happy child if we are constantly screaming threats at them. No parent sets out to hurt their child, but this type of parenting does just that. To raise a happy child that wants to behave, you need to retrain yourself first. You need to change the way you think and react to their behavior. You need to understand your triggers and heal yourself. Only then you can begin to heal your relationship with your children.

What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

Dr. Ross Greene, a distinguished clinician and pioneer in the treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, has worked with thousands of explosive children, and he has good news: these kids aren't attentionseeking, manipulative, or unmotivated, and their parents aren't passive, permissive disciplinarians. Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach.

More About Advocating Than Parenting
This booked touched on many subjects but it didn't seem to go very into detail on the actual parenting portion. It gave a lot of tips on advocating for your child when it comes to therapy on schooling which is awesome and so very helpful but the title is a bit misleading. Advocating For A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder would have been a more fitting title. I still found it worth the listen and would recommend it for any ASD parent.

If you told me this was written by AI (and read by it) I would believe you
I could not finish this book. It read like someone asked ChatGPT to write a book on how to manage (not parent) a kid with autism. I made it to the part where it told me that if my ASD kid is having a meltdown to try to reason with them and gave up. If you are a robot parent with robot kids who are autistic this may be a good book for you. Otherwise, find another book or ask Google for a top ten list since you may get more out of it.
