It was a quiet day in Paradise, Iowa, or at least Sheriff Sam Preston thought so as he drank his morning coffee. First, the power goes out, then a prehistoric animal kills a local man at the edge of town. Problems escalate with no GPS, a loss of all communication, and all roads into Paradise are cut off by heavy forest. When he realizes that the problems border on the side of science fiction, he assembles a hodge-podge team of scientists to figure out why it appears that the small Iowa town is the only human habitation on Earth.

You are probably wondering how there can be a Ship Book Six when the Ship series definitely ended with Book Five. It is called a side story or, as Hollywood would say, a spin-off. So, let’s go back to Discovery, Book One. End of Chapter 59, there is a conversation about saving mankind.

“Chameleon, is there a problem?”
“I am not sure, Meg. The explanation you gave Beth and Jake about the end of mankind is hard for me to process. I understand the logistics, but I do not comprehend why our creators do not allow you to help the humans.”
“I understand your concern, Chameleon, but our creators have very specific rules regarding interference. Once we hamper development within a species, it is difficult to determine how, and when to stop.
“Our creators however, have what Jake likes to call a backup plan. In the DNA sample room, there is a device that can take a small sample of Earth and move it into the future. It has been released and is hidden somewhere in deep space. We are the only two that know of this device, so you must never speak of this to anyone.”
“I understand, Meg. It looks like there may still be hope for mankind.”

This conversation will be the core of the side story. It is not about Jake McDonald’s world. It is a whole new story with a new cast of characters that takes place in Paradise, Iowa. If you like the Ship Series, we think you will like this one stand-alone story as much or even more. Enjoy

plot was good. treatment of murderers was unrealistically lenient leading to predictable prpblems later. nice treatment of environment, well unless you like 20 ft long komodo dragons....

Interesting concept, fun tie in with Ship series
