As I studied Matthew 25:1–13 across several translations, I found myself returning again and again to the same questions. I searched commentaries, listened to ministers, and spoke with seasoned believers, hoping to understand more fully the meaning behind the oil, the vessels, and the actions of the ten virgins. Yet even after all of that, something in me remained unsettled, as though there was still more the Lord wanted to reveal.
These thirteen verses are far too important to overlook. They speak directly to the Bride of Christ and to the sobering reality that only half of the virgins were prepared when the Bridegroom arrived. If Christ is indeed our Bridegroom, then this parable deserves our careful attention, our humility, and our willingness to examine our own hearts.
In this book, I want to explore who the virgins, or bridesmaids, represent, what the oil and the lamps symbolize, and what it truly means to “trim our wicks.” Most of all, I want us to honestly ask ourselves whether we are living as the wise or the foolish.
Scripture tells us that God has given every person a measure of faith. If the oil represents that measure, then perhaps trimming our wicks speaks to tending, guarding, and nurturing our faith so it remains ready at all times. We never know when we will need it, nor when the Bridegroom will call.
Chapter One
The Oil
The Central Symbol of the Parable
When Jesus told the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1–13, He placed the oil at the very center of the story. Lamps, wicks, vessels, and even the midnight cry all revolve around one essential truth: without oil, there can be no light.
The virgins all looked the same. They all carried lamps. They all expected the Bridegroom. But only half carried what mattered most.
The oil is the dividing line.
Understanding what the oil represents is the foundation of understanding the entire parable. And if we understand the oil, we can understand what it means to be ready for the Bridegroom’s return.
The Oil as the Anointing
What Is the Anointing?
Throughout Scripture, anointing is not merely symbolic—it is sacred. It represents the presence, empowerment, and consecration of the Holy Spirit upon a person’s life.
• Kings were anointed to rule (1 Samuel 16:13).
• Priests were anointed to minister (Exodus 28:41).
• Prophets were anointed to speak God’s words (1 Kings 19:16).
• Jesus Himself declared, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me…” (Luke 4:18).
The anointing is God’s supernatural enabling. It is His touch, His breath, His empowerment resting upon a believer.
Note: I discuss various symbols in Matthew 25:1-13. If all ten virgins represent the bride of Christ, then 50% are left behind. I think this is a very important message that we must study to be sure we understand what is required to spend eternity with Jesus. It is all about a relationship with Him. This book will walk you through how to do that.
I am not convinced that the five foolish virgins were outside the Bride of Christ. Their story raises questions worth wrestling with—questions that may help us understand what it means to stay spiritually awake, prepared, and full of the light others desperately need. I hope that this study will illuminate these truths and encourage us to keep our lamps burning, our reserves full, and our hearts ready for the moment the Bridegroom comes.
I highly recommend this book as a group Bible Study. I have Discussion and Group questions in the back of each chapter. I have given you two blank pages at the end of each chapter to use for your notes.
