Resumen del Editor

A moving debut middle-grade novel about a girl whose family is relocated to a Japanese internment camp during World War II - and the dog she has to leave behind.

Ten-year-old Manami did not realize how peaceful her family's life on Bainbridge Island was until the day it all changed. It's 1942, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and Manami and her family are Japanese American, which means that the government says they must leave their home by the sea and join other Japanese Americans at a prison camp in the desert. Manami is sad to go, but even worse is that they are going to have to give her and her grandfather's dog, Yujiin, to a neighbor to take care of. Manami decides to sneak Yujiin under her coat and gets as far as the mainland before she is caught and forced to abandon Yujiin. She and her grandfather are devastated, but Manami clings to the hope that somehow Yujiin will find his way to the camp and make her family whole again. It isn't until she finds a way to let go of her guilt that Manami can reclaim the piece of herself that she left behind and accept all that has happened to her family.

I think the feelings stood out the most.

I really liked the book. It was really nice. I’m not really someone who likes reading, but I like listening to people reading and definitely a book that I like.

Beautiful reading

As a former homeschool parent the reading of this book is spot on and the emotion of the characters is correctly portrayed.

So good!!

I think that this book portrays how hard it was for the thousands of Japanese having to be sent to these camps. I loved this book so much. I cried during some of the story but It was over all really, really, really good!

great story, poor audio

this was an excellent story and gave wonderful Insight into what it was like for the Japanese incarceration. Listen to the story from a child's perspective really allows another child listener too late and get into the story. However, the author read so softly that I had to turn up the volume on my headphones and on my phone all the way to here at a normal volume. At times when the soldiers would speak in the story. I got Extremely Loud and referred my ears but then immediately go back to a very quiet and soft-spoken leader. This really made the story very difficult to listen to while I was working and moving about, which is the whole reason why I purchase audiobooks.
