They’ve just achieved statehood in Book 1 of the "Palmetto Pioneers" series. But has the wilderness of this new wife’s childhood been completely tamed, or are there deadly threats on the horizon? This is book 2 of the series.

Florida, 1844. Mary Adeline Walker brims with optimism. After three years of marriage, she’s still head-over-heels in love with her refined gentleman of a husband and delights in their blended family of five children. But it’s hard to remain at peace as outlaw gangs constantly crop up and news of war with Mexico brings a spark to her spouse’s eyes.

Relieved as the conflict sweeps by without harming her household, Mary steadfastly keeps the home fires burning as her beloved takes on higher-profile government roles. Yet with their local economy entirely dependent on slavery, the grounded mother knows there’s no escaping hard times when her frontier state threatens to secede.

As her future spins out of control, can she become a peaceful refuge for those she loves?

Inspired by four decades of research experience, Cindy Roe Littlejohn delves into her family tree to offer a deeply personal look at what life was like in Old Florida. And as you're immersed in her creative tapestry of fictional narrative and carefully preserved historical records, you’ll gain a fascinating connection to the settlers who came before us.

Palmetto Pioneers: From Harmony to Hostility is a captivating work of historical narrative nonfiction and the second book in the Palmetto Pioneers biography series. If you like strong women, forgotten details, and evocative prose, then you’ll adore Cindy Roe Littlejohn’s glimpse of yesteryear.

Annoying to have computer read book that has wrong inflections and pronunciation frequently. However it was really interesting history of civil war era in FL and personal life of the family. Worst part was the abrupt ending without any explanation of what became of the family members. Recommend for the history but not for satisfying story.

How did it end?

I have enjoyed both the first book and this book. I have already purchased the third book and will begin listening to it immediately.
This is one of the best sources of history there is for this time frame in this area of the south. It is a genuine treasure.

Great History.

What an amazing period in our states’ history.
Many thanks to the author for her accurate portrayal of such a complicated time.

As good as the first!

i really hate the computer generated voice. I feel like the prices of the books should allow a live person to read it.

i enjoy the "history" of a time a place not much discussed.

I settled in to listen to a history about a region that I know, having lived there, and still living not far away. I think I would have really enjoyed the book, except for the virtual voice including caption of pictures and footnotes or references to the index. This is an audio version of the book. I can’t see any pictures. After the caption about several hitching posts with further reference to Wikipedia there was no choice but to stop the story. With an 8 hour listening time, it as just too much to Beas. With a visual handicap, reading the print version is not an option. I’m so sorry, and want the author to know that I am interested in this topic, but the narration is too disturbing. ( I know what a hitching post is, don’t need wiki io define.)

Distracting narrative
