It is easier to describe how to pray than to explain how the business of prayer actually begins. In these talks, originally given as a school of prayer, John Byrom maintains that the best analogy is with the human experience of falling in love, and that growth in prayer is always the response of the beloved to the Lover. It is essentially a natural activity arising out of the Christian experience of life under grace, and it renders us more fully human. Once established by the Spirit, the stages and crises through which the relationship grows correspond to the nature of God and of the human mind and heart. It is therefore legitimate and helpful to take desire (or even 'passion' as the title phrase borrowed from Walter Hilton suggests) as a primary clue on this journey of discovery.
