Superb history with great relevance to the democratic dilemmas of today - Lincoln’s character and humility come through clearly

Words for our time.

Mr. Guelzo presents an argument that the values of our democracy that we cherish were placed on our political altar only after great challenges. Through those challenges the values are honed into what can be interpreted as a ‘faith’. The author employs the actions and words of our greatest President to illustrate how the conflagration of civil war put old values to the test and birthed new, refined, values. As the Bible reveals the trials of Man as he searches for the “Will of God”, this book offers a glimpse of our journey to acquire a pure democracy. In both cases, Man still has much work to do.
