INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

Q: How did you decide to write for 8-14 year olds? A: My mother and I started writing short stories when I was five years old. We used to create all these fantastical narratives about our dogs or our daily lives, adding elements of magical realism to our tales. My mother played a very influential role in my upbringing and nurtured my creativity since I was young. Additionally, my friends and family would say I have a child-like essence, which I definitely get from my father. So in a way, if we take the experiences I had with my mother and the essence of my father, we arrive at this specific category of books.

Q: What is the most surprising or unexpected thing you would learn from this book? I’d have to say symbols and symbolic thinking. I really wanted to show kids, pre-teens and teens understand what symbols are, and the impact they can have all around us.

Q: What/who inspired the main character, Lenno, in OPENING NATURE’S DOORS? I’d have to say Lenno is derived, or a combination multiple figures in my life; my father, Aeneas from the Anaeid, and Mogli from the Jungle Book. My father was always out and about, exploring different parts of the world and finding out about the world’s hidden secrets, Aeneas because of what he did and how he helped found Rome, and Mogli, well, it’s pretty obvious if you read the book!

Q. Is this book for boys or girls? Both! Boys and girls between the ages of 8-14, teens and preteens, have read and loved it, so I hope you will too.
