I have loved researching the U.S. Old West to create this story. It covers horses, cattle drives, horseshoes and even poker games. The main character is Lonnie, a young boy with no apparent roots, who lands in trouble right away.

Here's a snippet: "Lonnie burst out of the saloon at full speed. He was running before his feet had started moving. He was in trouble, and he knew it. How it fell upon him was a mystery, but he knew when he picked up his last card that a fifth Ace would be a problem. What deck had two Ace of Diamond cards?"

I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed writing it! This is the first book in the series.

Start to Finish Exciting

At first starting to listen to this I dug into my memory of is this the first western audiobook I've ever listened to? Not at first remembering and LibbriVox audiobook from a few years ago, this is my second. I say second since the first was actually written in the time period this is set during. That audiobook had left a bad taste in my mouth and regret I had ever downloaded it. This story did not.

This story kept my attention so much I didn't want to stop listening to see where the story would go to the point I had to stop the audio, make a bookmark for my listening experience and go to sleep. I started listening to the story again after needed morning activities were taken care of.

Western is the fast way to mention what genre of story this is but it has a touch of mystery to it that I felt for the longest time in the story didn't exist. I thought I had a story element figured out and I'm sure that was intentional for readers er listeners to believe they knew a plot point when it arose.

The story builds slowly but it never feels boring and when it's moving at full sped you want to listen to it even more. Glad to know this is the first book because I want to sit down to the next that follows it.
