Diane Ackerman
Acerca de esta escucha
Following up on her international best seller The Zookeeper's Wife, Diane Ackerman tells the breathtaking story of the stroke that deprived her husband, Paul West - a distinguished novelist and poet - of every scrap of language beyond the syllable "mem". In her characteristically glorious prose, Ackerman weaves together the latest science on stroke and the brain’s ability to store and process language with her intensely personal journey as caregiver in helping Paul to an extraordinary recovery, and the impact of all this on their decades-long marriage.

Historia
Autism therapy typically focuses on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms such as difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. Now Dr. Barry M. Prizant offers a new and compelling paradigm: The most successful approaches to autism don’t aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual’s experience and what underlies the behavior. Rather than curb these behaviors, it’s better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer supports.

It would take eight years for Taylor to heal completely. Because of her knowledge of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and most of all an amazing mother, Taylor completely repaired her mind and recalibrated her understanding of the world.

Until John Wilson met the warm, wise woman who became his fourth wife, the object of his most intense devotion had always been the work of William Shakespeare. From his feat of memorizing Romeo and Juliet and half a dozen other plays as a student to his evangelical zeal as a professor, John's faith in the Bard has shaped his life. But now his mental powers have been diminished by dementia, and his wife has reluctantly moved him to a residential care facility.

Then, six months later, Jacob woke from his coma, to the delight and relief of his family and friends—except this proved to be anything but a Hollywood ending. Because to Jacob, the woman standing at his bedside, who had cared for him all these months, was not his partner. Not his children’s mother. Not the woman he loved. Beautiful story of love and endurance
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to believe in the power of enduring love and anyone who wants to understand some of what a stroke can do to an individual’s brain. Love can overcome so many obstacles and save someone from the darkness (in this case after a stroke and an inability to communicate for someone who loves words and expression). The beautiful twists and turns the author’s backstory provides of their love was interwoven so perfectly with the challenges and sadnesses of change. Love evolves with the relationship and gives hope that someone can remain true even in the toughest of circumstances. The entire book is phrased and describes every feeling so perfectly that you become immersed and can imagine yourself in their circumstances. One of my favorite books ever.

Tragic, touching, a story of undying love.
What made the experience of listening to One Hundred Names for Love the most enjoyable?
Paul's stroke is a vivid disaster, and you feel his trying to make someone understand him urgent and while not enjoyable, raw and emotional.
What did you like best about this story?
The intimacy between poet and writer.
