Resumen del Editor

Old Friends and New Fancies: An Imaginary Sequel to the Novels of Jane Austen, by Sybil Brinton. Presented by the Online Stage.

Old Friends and New Fancies is the first ever Jane Austen fan fiction and was originally published in 1913. Sybil Brinton imagines an entirely new story of romantic entanglements using a mashup of characters from all of Austen's major novels. Have you ever wondered what happened to Georgiana Darcy and Kitty Bennet from Pride and Prejudice or Mary Crawford and Tom Bertram from Mansfield Park? Find out in this delightfully comic homage to Austen's beloved characters.

Distracting narration

I wanted to listen to this book because it was fun to think of all of Austen’s main characters coming together in one book; however, I found the theatrical narration hard to listen to. I never felt really captivated by the story, maybe I should read it in print.

Read the book

I love the idea of interweaving Austen characters, and the author did a great job of it. But many of the voices given to the characters were horrendous. I could barely get through it! If it weren’t for the interesting story I’d have given up by the second chapter. The voices almost sounded fake, especially the narrator, who sounded like she was trying to be posh. The other voices, especially the young men, do not sound like they’d be attractive or people I’d like. Especially off putting is the narration that includes comments like “he said” right after a character said something. With different voices, it’s obvious, and inserting those comments in is jarring or breaks the cadence of the conversation. I ended up speeding to 1.5x because I felt could not get through the story fast enough. wish I would have gotten the Kindle version and read it for myself.
