O Pioneers! is one of Willa Cather's greatest novels. It is the story of a family of Swedish immigrants who take up farming in Nebraska. Young Alexandra Bergson becomes a heroine in the story when her father dies and she must take up the challenge of running the farm and taking care of her family. The portrait of Alexandra that Cather creates makes her one of the most-strong willed, intelligent and memorable characters in American literature.

Reseñas editoriales

O Pioneers, the first installment of Willa Cather’s classic Great Plains Trilogy, is an immigrant saga about the Bergsons, who have arrived in Nebraska from Sweden around the turn of the 20th century.

In Cather’s lucidly written, deeply felt tale, Alexandra Bergstrom must help her family farm thrive in the unforgiving Prairie frontier after her father dies. As Alexandra is drawn to family friend Carl Linstrum, her brother Emil falls in love with Marie, a married woman.

Cindy Hardin Killavey’s restrained, steady performance fits seamlessly with the humble diction and subtle emotional pull of Cather’s pioneer story.

The detail in the writing is enough to provide good visualization without being overwhelming. The story is thoughtful, helping me better understand the lives of the pioneers. It is pleasant listening. There is no gratuitous violence or profanity. I'd recommend this story for ages 14 to adult.
