The Problem
Our current healthcare system is increasingly incompatible with the needs of our population, particularly with regard to chronic illness and long-term care (LTC). Despite widespread dissatisfaction, major reforms are not in sight. Why is this the case? The reluctance to confront the realities goes beyond simple denial – it is not even considered a topic worthy of discussion.
The central symbol of LTC is the Nursing Home, the unfortunate marriage of the hospital and homeless shelter. The mistaken stereotype is nursing homes are smelly, unattractive and filled with frail, weird and half-dead people. Current attitudes reflect the belief that nothing can be done and the clinical situation is hopeless. As a society, we will not invest in LTC until we believe it is worth it.
The Challenge and the Key to a Solution
The basic challenge is to humanize the people in LTC and show they benefit from care. Until LTC has a better image few will advocate for more innovation and the image is unlikely to change. The paradox is that care is nursing homes is generally high quality in spite of a fragmented, understaffed, dysfunctional health care system.
Long-term care is a necessary aspect of life for many individuals, yet it is a relatively unexplored topic in storytelling. Through this book, I aim to challenge societal myths, stereotypes and misconceptions about long-term care and the value of elderly and disabled individuals who live there. I hope to offer insights and understanding into the world of long-term care.
The stories in this book reflect the intimate and personal nature of nursing home care, as well as the unique dilemmas and social boundaries that are encountered in this field. They showcase the spectrum of human life that LTC encompasses, with patients from all walks of life and a wide range of experiences, emotions, and challenges. I have learned many valuable life lessons from the people and through the experiences I have encountered in nursing home care. My goal is to share these lessons with readers through this book. The stories in this book also highlight the importance of compassion, empathy, and understanding in the care of elderly and disabled individuals. They emphasize the positive impact that simple, compassionate interventions can have on personal well-being.
I believe that stories have the power to serve as messengers of deep teaching. Each story offers a valuable lesson or insight. Whether you are a healthcare professional, a family member of someone in long-term care, or simply interested in learning more about the world of long-term care, this book has something useful to offer.
