Florence Nightingale spent much of her life promoting the establishment and development of the nursing profession and organizing it into its modern form. The narrator really seems to capture what comes across in Nightingale's own writing as verve, pragmatism, and incisiveness.
A lot of Nightingale's nursing advice is obsolete, but the means by which she arrives at that advice (considerate, patient-centered care that is undergirded by critical thinking) forms the cornerstone of modern nursing.

Not the best
As a nurse, I accepted this book as a historical essay on how nursing was back in her time. However, I would not recommend this as a book for nurses to follow in present day. Additionally, she came off a little arrogant and judgmental. After reading Nightingale’s biography, I now know why. She wasn’t the nicest person and was very unhappy. Read this book if you want but I wouldn’t consider it a must read for nursing students as it once was.
