Resumen del Editor

Baltimore is the setting for (and typifies) one of the most penetrating examinations of bigotry and residential segregation ever published in the United States. Antero Pietila shows how continued discrimination practices toward African Americans and Jews have shaped the cities in which we now live.

Eugenics, racial thinking, and white supremacist attitudes influenced even the federal government's actions toward housing in the 20th century, dooming American cities to ghettoization. This all-American tale is told through the prism of Baltimore, from its early suburbanization in the 1880s to the consequences of "white flight" after World War II, and into the first decade of the 21st century. The events are real, and so are the heroes and villains. Mr. Pietila's engrossing story is an eye-opening journey into city blocks and neighborhoods, shady practices, and ruthless promoters.

Interesting view of my hometown but...

The narrator mispronounced so many names and words that it was painful to listen to him. This is the story of my life, having grown up in Baltimore and whoever produced this should have corrected the narrator.

Impressive history of race relations in Baltimore

I bought the print version of this book last year for my son as a Christmas gift. He lives in Roland Park. He read it and was impressed. I got the Audible version last week, and was blown away. My family are long term residents of Baltimore City, and my ex-husband was an urban planner for HUD 1967-1980. I know the region well and the names of people mentioned, but I never really knew the detailed history of the racial hate, caste and corruption, living in my white bubble. I left Baltimore in 1998, but returned in 2019, and live here in an integrated apartment complex in a Jewish neighborhood. We all get along fine. This book is an important treasure trove of a sad piece of Baltimore history. Highly recommended.
