Resumen del Editor

The Vinyl Detective plunges into the world of electronic dance music in his seventh adventure.

Expect laughs, LPs, cats and the return of fan favourites, Nevada, Tinkler, Stinky Stanmer and more.

The Vinyl Detective enters the fraught and frenzied realm of electronic dance music.

Lambert Ramkin aka Imperium Dart, techno trickster and ambient music wizard of the 1990s, has gone walkabout, disappearing from his rather palatial home in Kent.

This isn't the first time he's pulled a vanishing act, but he's never been gone so long before and his wife — wives, actually; it's complicated — are worried and hire the Vinyl Detective to find the old rascal.

They theorize that wherever the missing man is, he won't be able to resist turning up at a record fair somewhere in search of 12-inch white label acid house singles, which he collects compulsively.

And no one knows the world of record fairs better than the Vinyl Detective.

They're not wrong…

a smorgasbord of quirkiness

In this installment the vinyl detective looks for a well known performer who's gone AWOL. The missing man is Imperium Dart, an electronic music guru, DJ, hipster-polygamist and creator of very elaborate illusions that resemble performance art. Our hero immediately gets in over his head. Dart doesn't seem to want to be found, only to lay traps for his persuer. Is the magical Imperium Dart seeking to kill or simply to dazzle and mesmerize?

The writing in this series is quite finely constructed and enjoyable with nicely drawn descriptions of people and places. I'm a big fan and yet as usual I did find the story containing some coincidences that were eyebrow raising. Perhaps the occasional improbability may be more a feature than a distraction since it's very entertaining.

The book is performed by Finlay Robertson who is just awesome. His characterizations are really clear and full of charm and likability.

THE VINYL DETECTIVE

Please take my advice and read all of these wonderful books. The narrator is perfect and "gets" the humor the author is trying to convey. The vocabulary, the plots, the characters, the humor - all very much worthwhile. I am a snob when it comes to the books I read and/or listen to and I was very happy to find this author with these great characters and stories - I hope he gives us more very soon! Highly recommend!

Less music nerdy than first couple of books

Took a while to lift off, second half more entertaining. Feels a little like he's run out of music nerdiness and moving into more mainstream territory, with pretty heavy focus on drugs. I'm not totally sure I'll continue the series after this one.
