Getting old is like blowing into a burst balloon

Decent listen; like Sex in the City meets Bridget Jones... if the story was sans Carrie Bradshaw with three, 39 year old British ladies and if the Bridget-style monologues of body insecurity focus on aging body parts instead of chubbiness. The profanity and sex are more Sex in the City than Bridget Jones (the first word of Chapter One is literally “sh*t”), so if F bombs turn you off and you prefer the sex to fade to black, this book may not be for you. There’s also adultery, lesbian sex, and Tinder, although you’d think that’d make for a raunchier, more lively story. Instead, this felt more like Love Actually, without any of the younger couples. Come to think of it, the interaction between the three ladies is also more like Love Actually, where the book mostly tells their stories separately, only bringing them together for an occasional chapter (the ladies don’t even get together until 2 hrs in).

Stella is Miranda, a fierce blonde, struggling with having traded her powerhouse career to be a stay at home mom. Ana is Charlotte, perpetually searching for the perfect marriage, babies, and life but always asking whether the grass is greener elsewhere. Dixie is Samantha, all “balls to the wall” on Tinder, pretending she’s not envious of her friends and their families.

As a woman over a decade past these ladies, I was mildly annoyed by the constant suggestion that, at 39, they were already over the hill. I’d kill for my 39 year old body and career back. This isn’t a book that will stick with me, and I didn’t find the ladies very likable, but it was an easy listen with some fun riffs and a fantastic narrator. As a bonus, I also found a fun new saying, that I’ll have to incorporate into my lexicon: “he had the integrity of a Cheeto.”
