From the legendary Oklahoma coach, a candid and inspiring memoir.

When Bob Stoops took over as football coach in 1999, the Oklahoma Sooners were in disarray with back-to-back losing seasons. But in just two years' time, Stoops achieved the seemingly impossible: winning a national championship and returning the struggling Sooners to their powerhouse status, churning out NFL talent, Heisman Trophy winners and conference championships, bowl wins and national title runs on a regular basis.

During his 18 seasons at OU, his record was a remarkable 190-48. At only age 56, at the peak of his career, he stunned the college football world by walking away.

For the first time, Bob opens up about his career alongside the evolution of the game itself. From his unlikely emergence as a star player at the University of Iowa, to his coaching apprenticeships under giants like Hayden Fry, Bill Snyder, and Steve Spurrier, Stoops recounts how the game he fell in love with as a boy has evolved into a billion-dollar business often compromised by recruiting wars, aggressive agents, overzealous boosters and alumni, and the emergence of the CEO head coach rather than mentor and teacher. Bob holds nothing back while explaining why it was time to step away from the game--and players--he still loves.

Told with a rare combination of sincerity, vulnerability, and pure heart, No Excuses is both an engaging and eye-opening football memoir and an unprecedented portrait of a coach of one of the greatest legacy programs in the history of the college game.

I have always liked the way Bob Stoops handled himself and the Sooners! This story was compelling and in places brought tears to my eyes. I am and always will be a Sooner fan. This story is a good road map to show young coaches how it should be. Barry Switzer, Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley have brought the Sooners and kept them in an elite group of college coaches. But these three did it with HEART! BOOMER!!!!

What a Story!

I’m glad coach Stoops decided to do it himself. I just wish he would add a chapter about the departure of LR and his thoughts about it.

Great story and Coach Stoops is a great narrator.

Words cannot describe how well this is done. The shortest chapter, Empathy, was the best one. The entire book far exceeded my expectations. Thanks!!

Great book

This book is the story of how a man gained and kept his beliefs in the modern world. For those looking for a detailed football book you will be slightly disappointed . The question you have to ask yourself is can you take your mind off the football field while learning how to win on it? I would compare this book to a hidden gem on audible called When the Game Stands Tall.
If you choose to read both books you will find out the reasons why the 2 books mix so well.
I can find "no excuse" to not read or buy both of them.;;

Well worth reading

This was a really interesting listen for me. I grew up in Bob's home town a few years before him and my grandparents lived a couple of blocks from his chiildhood home. His references to Youngstown''s schools. landmarks, personalities, and coaches were readily identifiable. I also had two children attend OU while he was there, so I was very familiar with many of the geographical references and timeframes throughout the story. (I've only driven through Iowa, so I had no personal connection there!)

Even if you are not from Northeast Ohio or have never been to Norman Oklahoma, the story is a good one. Bob's a hard worker, seems to honest, fair and kind to the people around him, and he's very generous with his time and money.

My only issue with the audible book was Bob's reading of his own story. Granted he's a football coach and not a professional narrator or actor, but at times he seemed like he was reading Wojo's interpretation of the story. It felt as if he had not read the book before he sat down in the sound booth to read it for Audible. Very choppy and distracting at times.

I enjoyed it!
