This book explores the spiritual tradition centered on the Nganga—a potent term whose meaning evolved dramatically as it traveled from Africa to the Americas. In many Bantu-speaking societies of Central and Southern Africa, a Nganga is a central figure: a traditional healer, diviner, and spiritual authority. Often called a priest or spiritual doctor, the Nganga uses a deep knowledge of herbal medicine, rituals, charms (nkisi), and divination to diagnose and treat physical, psychological, and spiritual problems. They are respected keepers of ancient wisdom who communicate with the spirit world and work to restore balance to the community, often addressing ailments believed to be caused by displeased ancestors or witchcraft. In the Afro-Cuban religion of Palo Mayombe, the term Nganga takes on a different, powerful meaning. It is not the priest, but the sacred iron cauldron or vessel that serves as the religion's focal point of power. This consecrated vessel, also known as a prenda, holds a potent collection of sacred earth, sticks (palos), herbs, animal elements, and, crucially, often contains items representing an nfumbe (spirit of the dead) bound to the vessel. This Nganga is considered a living, powerful entity through which the practitioner (Palero) performs rituals for healing, protection, divination, and influencing events. This book dives deep into the origins of this spirituality, beginning with the introduction of Christianity into Africa. It follows the journey of traditional practitioners during the transatlantic slave trade into Cuba and New Orleans. The book explores Palo, a unique creole tradition that masterfully blended Catholicism with ancient Afro-Indigenous wisdom from the Kongo region of Africa and the New World.
