When Martin Halliday and Frances Brewer defeat incumbent
President Rebecca Sweeny and Vice President Guy Pearle, the
American media—believing that the new administration can do
no wrong—casts off traditional journalism and prepares to enter
Nirvana.
Marty and Frances attempt to turn the page by undoing
everything their predecessors accomplished. But President
Halliday needlessly antagonizes Chinese President Sun
Nianzhen during his speech to a joint session of Congress,
and the Chinese president retaliates with a crippling attack.
Although Marty passes this first test with flying colors, he isn’t
so lucky when the Chinese launch an EMP attack that takes out
the West Coast power grid.
In desperation, Marty reaches out to his old friend Malcolm
Rutherford. If he can’t fix the facts, maybe he can shape the narrative.
Unfortunately for Marty, his weakness opens the door for
Frances Brewer’s ambitions, and at the end of his first year in
office, the new president finds himself isolated and threatened.
