The second volume of Nazis & Reds: A Chronology of the Prewar Years follows the Third Reich from the aftermath of Hitler’s bloody purge of June 1934 to the outbreak of global war in September 1939. In these years, the Nazi regime shed its revolutionary façade, forged alliances with Germany’s elites, and transformed into an apparatus of terror and expansion. The SS rose as the enforcer of Hitler’s will, the Nuremberg Laws codified racial persecution, and propaganda molded a nation into complicity. As Europe appeased and Germany rearmed, the road to war became inevitable. Like all the books in the series, it is the story of people caught in events. It is composed of diary entries, memoirs, speeches, combat situation reports, radio broadcasts, newspaper and magazine articles, and other historical documents selected not only for their ability to illustrate the past, but for their relevance in terms of the times in which we live.
