Written for teenagers but loved by adults, this is the story of Nancie Knight whose world falls apart when she goes into service as a scullery maid. Never in her wildest dreams would she have envisaged such hard work. The housekeeper of The Manor does not allow her any slack and the cook can never remember her name. Promises that she will soon be reunited with her mother and baby brother amount to nothing. When she hears strange noises from one of the attic rooms, she investigates. Disobeying an order not to go there again, she is sacked. Now what is she to do? How will she cope on her own? Customer review: I have always liked stories set in times past, this one fit that bill perfectly. Nancie is a nice glimpse into life in that time before the safety nets of today.
