NXT is a system built using virtual reality as a way to get inside someone's mind and see what makes them tick. It is often used as a way to "cure" an individual of their past, traumas, and anything else seen as a potential threat.

Clyde Jackson made it his mission to secure the sanctity of humanity once Doctor Wyatt took over his parents' program. Through many successes, came one difficult case. It wasn't until later he learned the horrifying truth that was kept from them all.

NXT is about the mind-altering adventure of Echo Turner as she battles for freedom in a near-future world designed for rebuilding one's sanity. Worse still, it is rather used to psychologically torture, hunt, and prey upon anyone who has entered this inescapable prison. Many don't survive... Many more won't...

Awakenings x Shawshank Redemption x The Matrix

x A Clockwork Orange x Others you'll certainly think of while listening. Combining several respected tropes into an unrecognizable new story that stands on its own legs is no small task, yet DA Rasmussen manages to craft a world where potentially dangerous people can get rehabilitated inside virtual spaces. But are we to believe those administering the treatment, and what happens when the system is misused? Anything else I tell you would be spoilers. Kyra Lane puts forth an impressive narration with distinct voices for the main characters. One aspect I enjoyed is the straight forward method of story telling, without an overuse of technical gobbledegook to try and sound fresh. I look forward to book 2 and seeing where this story continues to play with our perceptions of reality and trust. [Disclosure: I received this title for free and listened at 2.0x.]
