Good Material, Audio Flaws

Specific to the audio version.

The material is Rick's typical devotional material, which has a bit more of a leaning toward the scholarly side than most in this genre. Rick is not a "stealth Christian" teaching feel-good material that accidentally mentions God sometimes, or the kind of pastor who can give a 23-minute sermon that quotes a single verse halfway through. It may still take him 20-30 minutes to go through a verse, but that's because he's sometimes teaching a lesson on each word. Thankfully he is nowhere near as dry as many other expository teachers and really does have a gift for bringing otherwise scholarly material into everyday life and common vocabulary.

As a point of fairness, if you're familiar with Rick's other work he does repeat some material here. Surprise! He goes into the Armor of God in several lessons. This was not enough of a problem to deduct points from the rating, and to his credit he has toned down the length of these entries to be more appropriate for devotional length (some of the entries in "Hidden Gems Vol 2" approached full sermon length).

What brings it down for me were noticeable audio problems. I would find it difficult to believe this was truly narrated by Rick, as there are several of the problems typical to AI voice tools: bizarre mispronunciations for common words; strangely placed pauses; pronouncing abbreviations (saying "v 12" instead of "verse 12"); reading the colon in a verse notation as if it were sentence punctuation; and the worst offender of not creating a pause between the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next. The chapter problem is especially problematic for a devotional intended to be paused daily. This was almost certainly "narrated" by an AI tool trained on his voice and suffers for it.

I did like the book, and if a future remake involved human narration I'd readily recommend it to others.
