In My Religion, Leo Tolstoy accuses the church of hiding the true meaning of Jesus, which is to be found in the Sermon on the Mount and the call to resist evil. For Tolstoy, it is this command that has been most damaged by ecclesiastical interpretation.

Tolstoy had not always been possessed of the religious ideas set forth in My Religion. For 35 years of his life, he was, in the proper acceptation of the word, a nihilist - not a revolutionary socialist but a man who believed in nothing. But faith came to him; he believed in the doctrine of Jesus, and his life underwent a sudden transformation.

Tolstoy was a genius, without peer in both fiction and non-fiction. Difficult subject well delivered.

Great book, great reader

Bob Souer’s narration of the audiobook version of Leo Tolstoy’s My Religion is outstanding. In this compelling work, Tolstoy traces the profound evolution of his faith through a meticulous study of Christ’s teachings, drawing on Greek and Hebrew biblical texts. He distills Jesus’ teachings into core ethical principles, offering a unique interpretation that diverges from traditional Christian perspectives. His analysis emphasizes moral imperatives over allegorical or supernatural elements. Tolstoy’s insights are enlightening and thought-provoking. Rejecting formal church doctrines, he dismisses the literal resurrection of the dead, the supernatural miracles of Jesus, and sacraments like baptism and the Eucharist as human inventions. Tolstoy presents Jesus as a human teacher whose ethical insights, particularly from the Sermon on the Mount, reveal God’s will, while explicitly denying Jesus' divinity and the doctrine of the Trinity. Though these radical views challenge conventional beliefs, Tolstoy’s focus on practical morality offers a compelling and provocative vision of Christianity that inspires reflection.

Very Profound and Enlightening

This book seems to be one of those books you stumble on and say to yourself, "This book right here is the world's best kept secret." Many people have heard of War & Peace and a few of his other literary works but ask people about this book and very few if any have even heard of it's existence.

This book should not be reviewed further or commented on. People should have to read it.
