NATIONAL BESTSELLER • In this “stunning” (People), “riveting” (Entertainment Weekly) historical novel, a young writer journeys to South America to uncover the truth about her father—and herself.

“All of Allende’s books, My Name Is Emilia del Valle included, have the epic feel of a major Hollywood film.”—Associated Press

In San Francisco in 1866, an Irish nun, abandoned following a torrid relationship with a Chilean aristocrat, gives birth to a daughter named Emilia del Valle. Raised by a loving stepfather, Emilia grows into an independent thinker and a self-sufficient young woman.

To pursue her passion for writing, she is willing to defy societal norms. At the age of seventeen, she begins to publish pulp fiction using a man’s pen name. When these fictional worlds can no longer satisfy her sense of adventure, she turns to journalism, convincing an editor at The Daily Examiner to hire her. There she is paired with another talented reporter, Eric Whelan.

As she proves herself, her restlessness returns, until an opportunity arises to cover a brewing civil war in Chile. She seizes it, as does Eric, and while there, she meets her estranged father and delves into the violent confrontation in the country where her roots lie. As she and Eric discover love, the war escalates and Emilia finds herself in extreme danger, fearing for her life and questioning her identity and her destiny.

A riveting tale of self-discovery and love from one of the most masterful storytellers of our time, My Name Is Emilia del Valle introduces a character who will never let hold of your heart.

The story about this strong minded character was good. The details would have interesting; but it was lost on my annoyance with narration. The story was read in a way where the words were broken up as if the narrator added her own punctuation. I was focused more on how many words the narrator could speak without pausing. The answer: generally 3-4; occasionally 7.

Good story; terrible narration

The story was compelling. Allende always is. Perhaps in the translation some things were lost. Did they use the word “kids” for children in the late 1800’s? Was the verb “gifted” used at that time? I think not. The narrater had that annoying Peppa Pig way of leaving out the “t” in words such as mountain (moun-un), certain (cer-un) and the like. Drove me crazy but otherwise she had a lovely voice.

Great story

Another experience of learning through the fiction and joy. Education system should start including Isabel Allende in their programs.

Absolutely beautiful story of an indomitable woman. It is somewhat of a sequel to Daughter of Fortune. Love Isabel Allende’s novels. One is better than the other. Her imagination weaves history and culture with the fantastic splendidly. A page turner! But I so wish this book had had a better reader. The reader’s interpretation was very choppy and took away from the natural flow. A trained actor might have done a better job. She did not read as one speaks. But the story was so good that I just continued on. An excellent book!!

Tour de force! Superb book, poor reader.

An amazing book; full of suspense, anxious moments, and culminated with surprise blended somewhat with relief.

A strong and courageous woman

First I must remark on the tedious narration of this otherwise remarkable book. The narrator spoke slowly and seemed to need a new breath after a few words. Without Allende’s story to breathe life and interest into this book, I doubt I would have finished it.
The most dramatic aspect of this novel was Emilia’s involvement in the Chilean civil war. There was no shortage of graphic details of the fighting and carnage. The loss of humanity brought on by the fear of death lead to acts of such savagery that, for once, the narrator’s pace and voice seemed to muffle the horrific events. The suggestion of similarity with our own civil war was chilling.
Once Emilia is able to escape from death as a spy, her story changes to becoming enchanted by the Chilean countryside and its natural beauty. She enlists help from tribes who respond to her courage and a few foreigners who want to help her find the lands left by her disappointing, but noble father. His only connection to her was through impregnating her mother. He has led a life of indolence, but his wealthy family indulged him to avoid embarrassment. His books and knowledge of the natural world intrigued Emilia and they have a sort of friendly relationship. After his death she learns that she has inherited lands in a remote and almost otherworldly area of Chile. She undertakes a grueling trek through a strange landscape and nearly dies of pneumonia, but pledges to remain in this vital surrounding supported by a tribe that reveres her and renames her. Her search for adventure as a journalist, at a time when no women did that, has delivered her to a new home. Her journalist lover hears of her in San Francisco and travels back to find her in the epilogue of the book.

Themes of family, historical events and adventure, with an altogether original female at the center.

Compelling characters and story!

Loved Allende’s gift of visualizing, for the reader, a world so unlike current reality ( at least for this reader) yet “connect” a far past time to a temporal one. Love historical fiction and this is one of the best I’ve “lived” with Allende.
