Acerca de esta escucha

Previously published as Mrs. Grimly: from slave to heiress by Hajek, Ronald

In the antebellum South, a young slave girl named Tina and her mother Roxy face brutal punishment and dehumanization at the hands of their cruel white master. However, their fortunes take an unexpected turn when they are purchased by the imposing but oddly gentle plantation owner Ronald Grimly. Though initially terrified of the towering "Grim," Tina and Roxy soon discover that Grimly is a complex man who treats his slaves with unprecedented kindness and respect.

As Tina grows into a young woman, Grim develops a profound affection for her, eventually freeing both her and her mother and seeking Roxy's blessing to court Tina. Despite the legal and social taboos against interracial relationships, Grim and Tina fall deeply in love, engaging in an intimate, tender romance marked by his unwavering respect for her. Grim transforms from a racist plantation owner to an ardent abolitionist, using his wealth and influence to create a safe haven for freed slaves on his property.

Seizing the opportunity to legally marry, Grim proposes to Tina during a voyage to England, where their union is recognized. They enjoy several years of happiness in England, starting a family together, before reluctantly returning to the American South as the Civil War looms. Grim arms and trains his former slaves to defend the plantation, which becomes a key staging ground for Union forces.

As Grim reaches old age, he falls ill with tuberculosis, knowing his time is limited. On his deathbed, he ensures Tina, and their children will be provided for, leaving her a staggering fortune. Tina is devastated by the loss of her beloved husband but takes comfort in the knowledge that Grim was deeply loved by the community of former slaves he had treated with such kindness. Years later, as a 97-year-old woman, Tina reflects on her extraordinary life with Grim, forever grateful that he saved her from a life of slavery and showed her the true meaning of love before his passing. Though she never remarried, Tina cherished the profound bond she shared with Grim until the end of her own days.
