Monda's Prism

A novella

Terry Pellman

Jack Monda is an unremarkable man living an equally unremarkable life. Retiring at the age of forty-eight after working thirty years as a custodian in the city building of Sweetport, Ohio, Jack is now free to pursue his true ambition: sitting on the sofa and watching old Westerns.

That is, when he is not hanging with his best friend since the seventh grade.

Oliver Hudson, his frail and disabled buddy, is the one exception to Jack Monda’s general disdain for the rest of humanity.

Jack also serves as Oliver’s enabler, supplying and consuming alcohol and weed to the addict who has no desire to not be addicted.

Jack is loyal to Oliver. Oliver is loyal to Jack, his reliable friend who is just another regular guy.
A regular guy, that is, but for the fact that, since childhood, when Jack was subjected to either the scorn of the teacher, or in later life, adult crises, he has been able to conjure up a protective, colorful prism around him. And that is no small trick for a man who has been colorblind since third grade.

But Jack has no desire to meet the expectations of anyone else. For that matter, the only person of importance remaining in his life is Oliver. That is, until his interest is stirred by a woman who appears behind the counter of his favorite carryout.

Now, yet another person is confronted with the challenge of understanding the man with the power to summon the mystical, colorful spectrum, inside which he finds sanctuary and peace.
