Thomas Bontrager moves to Planter’s Point with his orphaned nephew, Bobby, following the death of the Bobby’s parents in a buggy accident that leaves the seven-year-old boy crippled. Bobby now walks with a leg brace, but Thomas fears his nephew’s wounds run much deeper than the one that can be seen. Bobby has grown silent and withdrawn, and Thomas doesn’t know how to reach him.

Then, a visit to the town’s bakery brings someone new into their lives, a young woman who might have the ability to help heal Bobby’s heart.

Clara Lantz is undeniably drawn to the two newcomers. She feels a kinship to the young boy, since she suffered a similar injury. Yet, she has an added burden too terrible to share — she caused the buggy accident that took her mother’s life. Clara fights against her growing feelings for Thomas and Bobby, certain she does not deserve anyone’s love.

When Thomas learns the truth about Clara, will it bring them closer together? Or is Clara right — she doesn’t deserve the love of any man, even one so kind as Thomas?
