I was thirty years old.
She was a woman I met on a dating site a few years earlier.
We went out on a few dates and I noticed red flags early, but dismissed them as most people do when physically attracted to someone.
After dating for a while, we decided to just be friends and one day while taking her out to dinner, I casually mentioned that if I am able, I always try to help people in need. When I mentioned this, her eyes lit up. I thought nothing of this, but looking back as the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20. A few days later, she asked to borrow money from me. She was a single mom and said she needed money to feed her kids. The amount was $80. Out of kindness, I obliged.
A week later, she needed another $80. Then another week later, $80 more.
I soon found out she was a synthetic heroin addict and the money I was giving her was fueling her drug habit.
All in all, she borrowed $1,100 dollars from me over a period of about three months.
I had it to give, so I gave.
Eventually, after months of non-payment, I took her to small claims court. She didn't show and I won. However, what I didn't know was in order to collect payment, I had to know her place of employment or the name of her bank.
For reasons that should be obvious, she had blocked me after I sued her.
I realized I had been taken by someone I thought I knew, liked, and trusted; a so-called friend. That day, I vowed to never be taken advantage of in the same manner again.
This book is a compilation of things I have learned along the way, many times through experience.
If you have ever experienced something like I went through, this book is for you.

This is a book on how to protect yourself against manipulation.

This book is also for you if:

1. If you are dealing with manipulative partners, family members, or so-called "friends", this book is for you.

2. If you are doing your best to navigate workplace politics, deceptive colleagues, or manipulative bosses, this book is for you.

3. If you want to protect yourself against deceptive people, this book is for you.

4. If you are an impressionable young person and want to help yourself identify and combat peer pressure, this book is for you.

5. If you have been involved in a psychologically abusive or controlling relationship, this book is for you.

6. If you have ever been a victim of domestic violence, this book is for you.

7. For all the empaths and those with a good heart whose kindness is often mistaken for weakness, this book is for you.

8. And finally, for my former self who despite their best intentions, was raised by parents, a church, and a school system that prioritized giving and helping over setting and reinforcing boundaries, this book is for me.

May this book be the starting point to a healthier, happier, more self-confident you that can set clear boundaries and knows your worth.
