The whole dying thing sucked, but Frankie isn't going to dwell. She's focusing on the positive. She's alive. Ish. Her family is safe. Her business is booming. She's even got a boyfriend. Everything is coming up roses in Thunderbolt, Georgia.

Until a client decides she needs more time and makes a run for it in her loaner body. Too bad for the client, the last thing Frankie does before a loaner hits the showroom floor is microchip them for this very reason. Finding the runaway soul will be a piece of cake.

Or it would have been if she hadn't bumped into Carter, who's working a case that gets tangled up in Frankie's repo. Missing women. Stolen cars. Alien abductions? The only way to get Frankie out of trouble is to help Carter uncover who's behind it all. And pray the answer isn't her client.

Contains mature themes.

Both the story and performance in this audio book are top notch. I'm totally invested in the characters and the stakes, and how Edwards manages to create a genuinely sweet relationship between two death deities is masterful story craft.

She also drops some gentle social commentary, which is poignant and apolitical. I also caught an Easter Egg nod to Clay and the Black Hat series.

This book is my favorite in the series so far.

“You look a lot like my Frankie, but you can’t be her- she has more sense!”
Instead of mystery procedural, this installment took Frankie down a rabbit hole of deities. I couldn’t get a handle on the world building or the god-canon; it seems “gods” are nothing more than unhinged, immature beings with phenomenal power. Between their behavior and the arbitrary powers/rules, the plot seemed random. Frankie’s arc keeps making her a boring Mary Sue who’s victorious simply by virtue of her special nature.

“Frankie’s having a potato sack moment.”
Unfortunately, other than the confusing mystery connected to gods, not a lot happens in this book. There’s repeats of the awkward relationship antics with Frankie and Kierce. There’s even less screen time for Josie and Mattie. There’s virtually nothing about the original premise of Frankie using her necromancy to let the departed take care of unfinished business. It’s focused on Frankie and Kierce and godlike powers. I was left wanting more family, humor, action, or actual smart sleuthing/strategizing by Team Frankie. I’ll continue on, but I’m not in a rush to do so.
