I wish I found this book a decade ago when I was 18!

It had me hooked, I can’t explain it but very relatable material. Me having adhd and being a very very bad overthinker. This helped me realize I am lacking critical thinking skills, logic and reason….. all things you can apparently change.

An Original Roman Stoic, In His Own Words(ish)

Stoicism is an exceedingly popular concept these days. A deluge of books and other media about the topic has inundated the digital space. For all the books about stoicism, and even about Marcus Aurelius’ flavor, few focus on the words of the man himself. Yes, most books pluck out short quotes to prove a particular point, but rarely do these books focus on longer passages. This book is a modern translation of his entire book entitled Meditations. I found it interesting in the introductory material where the publisher explained that Marcus Aurelius wrote this work for himself, to remind him of things he had learned along the way so he could continue to improve his thoughts and actions and stay on a better path. Fascinating! I have read no other full translations of Meditations, so I have nothing else to compare it to. Is it true to the original? It is certainly easy to understand and listen to, which I appreciate. But some language felt too modern. Did Marcus Aurelius have so many opinions on what I consider to be contemporary self-help topics concepts, or has the translation been conflated and molded to parallel that? Of course, I can't really say, but I am curious. Mostly, the narrator did a decent job, though he seemed to struggle with the names of some Greek and Roman names. Oddly, he could not say the word “bestow” correctly, and this word was used several times. He rhymed it to “cow” rather than “low.” It clunked hard in my ear, pulling me out of the famous Stoic’s world.
