It was too late to judge his choice—& there was just too much rhetoric to cover. She’d set aside her thoughts & suspicions to show up emotionally for Cole’s wife & kids. She planned to walk into that hospital room & unflinchingly support Cole. She’d steel herself. They’d say their goodbyes. They’d take him away. That would be it. A release ceremony—as in: legally releasing the body to the Eidolons. Cole didn’t help matters. Fending off the cost of burying an empty casket, Cole insisted on forgoing a funeral & burial plot. Maya wondered out loud if that was the cause of all the conspiracies. Humans need closure. A whole new way to die slapped humanity down—hard & fast. No remains. No place to visit—leave flowers—cast wishes, apologies, & reports.
