Resumen del Editor

American scientist Matt Miller has been torn from his own century and dumped into colonial Virginia with only his backpack and his wits. He has come to terms with where he is and when and has surrounded himself with new friends but has also made an enemy who has sworn his destruction.

Matt now leaves Virginia to make his fortune in Philadelphia, with the hope of returning and claiming the hand of the woman he loves. It seems predestined that he has been dropped into this new century to succeed on a grand scale. He soon finds that a sworn enemy in colonial America is no small thing.

Interesting at times

I was a little unsure on how to rate this. While at times interesting and amusing, The constant Christian propaganda distracts from more interesting storylines.

Book2 is much better than Book1 and Book3 = best

This review is more of a review for the entire trilogy and deliberately so. That's because The Journeyman - book 1 - is so slow and plodding and wrapped in only the thinnest veneer of time travel that I quit reading it three times and then only finished book 1 out of grudging spite. But book two - The Prophet - gets notably better in plot, character evolution and a slightly more plausible time travel theme.

By book 3 - The Virginian - the story moves with a compelling narrative, intertwining character engagement and rapid pace that defies the previous lethargy in book 1 - it is well worth the wait and commitment.

This book - #2 in the trilogy - The Prophet - is where the story really starts to move and the characters explored in a depth and complexity that makes more sense and drives the story - a failing of book 1.

So my guidance is to wade through The Journeyman and get to The Prophet and you will be rewarded with an interesting character tale that weighs the personal values of early settlers vs modern America (although avoiding the horrors of slavery and thereby losing a notable degree of credibility for the earlier era) and delivers an enjoyable plot line that carries the listener along the journey willingly. Still thin on 'time travel' creds, it still merits a solid read with payoff at the end of each book and a full accounting in book 3.

Also a word on the author's narration which is mentioned - negatively - in various reviews. I did not find it a problem and thought Rose did an admirable job that did not interfere with the enjoyment of the book. No, he is not as good as many of the pro's whose voices move between male and female, character to character flawlessly (Roberto Scarlato!) and effortlessly but his voice matches the main character and was perfectly acceptable and better than some.

Simple story

It is not a bad series. The world building is minimal, the characters are not too developed, and the story skips large periods of time. Compared to the first book, this one has a more YA feel to it. Other reviews have said it and I'll echo it here, the Destiny's Crucible series is a far more detailed look on a similar concept of a modern man in the 18th century. All that being said, I have bought book three and will continue the story.

Love this series

As a US History major, I always am distracted by glaring inconsistencies in historical fiction. Rose did a great job keeping an authentic grounding while working in a great time travel story. Of course he had to take a few liberties but any scenario could be plausible when transporting back to the 1770’s. Thanks for a fun journey.

Wonderful! Even Better Thank Book One!

After finishing Matt Miller in the Colonies, Book 1 last week, I couldn't wait to learn the 'rest of the story.' I consumed Book 2 over the weekend and loved every second of the audio book.

The introduction of Benjamin Franklin into the plot was surprising and effective. And the continued development of the lives of other time travelers opens up many possibilities for Book 3.

Congratulations to Mark for another outstanding story. I'll be among the first listeners to the next installment. And, based on Franklin's letter at the end of the book, things are getting very interesting in England!

new narrator needed

the book is good bur Rose should let someone else narrate. voices aren't distinct enough, it is jarred top tell characters apart.

Couldn’t Put It Down

As an animal lover, I can say there were many chapters that made me cry. I won’t go into detail but probably was my favorite part of the book.

A compelling sequel

I was happy to have the second audio book available so soon after completing the first. The author paints another compelling storyline following Matt Miller as he establishes himself as a man worthy of a woman’s love. I’m looking forward to the next chapter of this journey and hope that the wait for the third book is as equally short as it was for the second.

Good continuation

As Matt Miller settles into his fate living out his life in the 1700's, book two resolves some ongoing mysteries while also providing many new and entertaining challenges for Matt to face. I am again impressed by the narration, despite the author reading his own work and would not hesitate to pick up another book narrated by Mark J. Rose in the future. Overall, I would rank book 2 as better than the first and recommend. 5 stars.
