I liked this book better than my daughters did. I started listening with them and went ahead and finished the book before they did. Partly because it was a hilarious and sweet story, and partly because this character was growing up roughly around the same time as my late mom was. And like Maryellen, my mom was One of six kids. So this made me feel closer to my mom and got me thinking about her childhood. This was the first full American girl book I had read in about 30 years. I read them as a kid, but this particular character wasn't written yet then. My oldest is nine and just started reading AG books. Though she has enjoyed Kit and Felicity stories more than she did Maryellen. While I didn't find either of those half so interesting. Even though Felicity was a re-read for me and I had loved it as a kid. She fell flat for me compared to this one.
I thought this story was super cute. And truly funny in some parts. Maryellen has a lot of good ideas and a lot of them don't go well. The story is sweet and has a happy ending, but with enough mistakes along the way to make it interesting and the character relatable.
