Resumen del Editor

What do you buy and sell when the global markets reach saturation point? The markets themselves. Thirty years from now the big players in global capitalism have moved on from commodities. The big money is in conflict investment. The corporations keep a careful watch on the wars of liberation and revolution that burn constantly around the world. They guage who the winners will be and sell them arms, intelligence, and power. In return for a slice of the action when the war is won.

The reward? A stake in the new nation. It's cynical, brutal, and it has nothing to do with democracy and the rule of law. So what else is new? The executives in this lethal game bid for contracts, fight for promotion, secure their lives on the roads. Fighting lethal duels in souped up, heavily armoured cars on the empty motorways of the future. Chris Faulkener has a lethal reputation and a new job at Shorn Associates. Has he got what it takes to make a real killing?

Worth the listen

I enjoy sci fi and have listened to many of the greats. Every so often I come across a sci fi novel that gives me new insight on the world that we live in now. Market Forces gives form to forces of human nature played out in a world only slightly different from ours. Different only in the sense it lays bare the results of actions that are only partially hidden in today’s world. .

Social satire played out a bit too long

As you probably guessed, this is Morgan's first big non-Kovacs novel, and the results are mixed. The book would have worked much better if it was shorter, as it is the premise of the ultra-competitive Mad Max in the boardroom investment bankers who literally kill for a deal runs a bit thin. Partially, this is because the characters are rather well drawn, making the weird cartoonishness of the world seem increasingly silly in comparison, and partially because the book gets bogged down in the moral miasma that it creates. Yes it satires the modern world, but the alternate universe it creates is so unpleasant that you quickly lose track of the parallels.

The book is saved from being a total cartoon (note that the plot is at least in part: Should the banker support evil governments for profit while staying with the hot women, or should he join the UN at the risk of his life while coming back to his wife?) by richly drawn characters. But the characters are so awful that you will grow to hate all of them. So, a good-ish listen, imaganinative and much better written then most science fiction on Audible, but not always pleasant.

Fantastic Suspense with Raw Action - a Must Read!

Morgan did it again in another captivating story with everything you'd want - love, lust, action, suspense, betrayal, sex, guns, grit, and intellect. This story not only encompasses the aforementioned, but also projects emotion and inward thought in the reader. Vance accomplishes the narrative with outstanding interpretation and articulation. An overall fantastic book accompanied with striking narration. As mentioned in the title of this review - it's a must read. Enjoy!

Interesting, but not compelling.

Market Forces kind of reminded me of a really well written plot for a B movie. Gladiatorial combat with cars for career advancement cheapened an otherwise compelling plot. The concept was kind of stretched. It reminded me of knight rider from the 80's. (although much better written.) A good plot with intrigue and mystery was stretched thin to accommodate a car chase. Overall I found it entertaining but was disappointed by what it could have been.

five stars with better editing

Morgan is at top form; if you like hardboiled, visceral, unrelenting and unforgiving action and drama, then you're likely to enjoy anything he has ever written. The single reservation I have with this entry us the occasionally uneven editing between vocal cuts, pauses where there should sometimes be a smooth flow and, in other places a jarringly fast segue between chapters.
That's it, my only gripe.
This book, like any other written by this author, is not for the easily offended out faint of heart. You've been warned... but if these things aren't a problem for you, you'll likely snap up everything else in Morgan's library.

Good easy listen

This book was quite entertaining and well thought out. It has unexpected turnings and a rich character development. It's an easy listen, well read, with great voices. I wish Morgan had more out. Having said this it was not as good as Altered Carbon but it was excellent.

Corporopunk

A departure for the author in some ways, this gritty tale of "what if" reads like Cyberpunk written by Ayn Rand.

The world is run by powerful corporations who foster local wars to create market places for military hardware and take portions of GNP in payment. The corporations believe in Social Darwinism to the Nth degree. In order to have the best and brightest, toughest and cruelest working for the company, they have instituted road rage challenges on the way to work.

The protaganist is an up and comer in this world of the company who has a good car, good driving instincts and a good sense of how to foster a profitable revolution. Unfortunately, he also has a lingering sense of morality.

As always with Morgan, the characters in the book are not all good or all bad. You will however, root for the protaganist anyway.

FInally, I found the reading very good as well.

Not bad, but not that good either

I found the title and summary a little deceptive. this book took me a while to get into. It is sort of a melding of" Road Warrior" meets "Wall Street" the Movie( think Gordan Gecko(Micheal Douglas)). This book was more about the corporatization of War. It is a fictional tale set in futuristic Britain. pretty much where things are a broken down to the very wealthy corporate mecenaries and everkyon else is the dirt poor. so there is only 2 classses. I didn't start to get into this book til about 3 to 4 hours in. probably because i'm not that much into the whole mad max future thing . This book did sort of show that there is profit in war making it just didn't show how. All in all it was only a Decent Read

awesome!

I really enjoyed the Kovacs novels, but be warned this is a big departure. Its slower and more cerebral than those books. So if you're just in the mood for a Kovacs sci-fi, shoot 'em up, sex romp you might be disappointed.

That said, this is probably my favorite Richard K. Morgan novel. Yes, I like the Road Warrior aspect of it all, and the ideas about the future of corporations were great. The book also has some elements of some my favorite classics though like The Great Gatsby maybe even Dickens or Aldous Huxley. I thought it was pretty awesome overall.

Cyberpunk Lives!

The dark, corporate future depicted in Market Forces is reminiscent of Jack Womack and William Gibson. Though some of the old Cyberpunk works are beginning to show their age, Morgan breathes new life into the genre with dueling executives in armored Jaguars! It?s very exciting stuff with a realistic social commentary on the inhuman nature of corporations.
