For her eighth birthday, Marie receives an ornament in the form of a necklace. This gift has lain untouched for over a hundred years and left to her by her long deceased great, great, great grandmother. That grandmother is none other than Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen of New Orleans. As the years pass, Marie come to realize the ornament is not only an amulet, but a talisman as well. It has great power. In possession of the ornament, one can not only heal the sick, make the poor wealthy, but raise the dead as well. Excerpt from book: "Try again," Lizabeth whispered, her voice trembling. Having no doubt the effort would fail for the second time, Marie turned to begin chanting again. This time she paid scant attention to the pulsation of blood rushing through her body and out to the hand pressed against the stone wall. Somewhere near mid-point of the chant, something happened. Something moved. The vibration she felt was beyond that of her pulse. A few moments later, Tonya and Lizabeth felt it as well. There was what seemed to be a rumbling from behind the walls of the tomb. The rumbling continued to grow to where it could be felt on the walkway. As Marie remove her hand and drew away from the crypt, she realized the other girls had already taken several steps back. Observing the crypt from several feet away, it was very evident that it was, indeed, shaking much like a building during an earthquake. However, nothing else around the structure was moving. This was not an earthquake. Then, as the girls stood wondering whether the structure would crumble and the wall collapse to reveal whatever or whomever was interred inside, the rumbling abruptly ceased. Silence prevailed. As the deluge of blood pounding through her body sounded to her ears much like the agitation of a washing machine, Marie looked back to see Tonya and Lizabeth standing in awe, much like stone statues. Allowing her gaze to scan beyond them, her eyes fell on the dog that had been following them. Its eyes now glowed blood red!
