A beautiful and transformative memoir, Maria’s Scarf is the incredible story of a mother’s love, a family’s unbreakable bond, and a starry-eyed boy who never lost sight of his dreams.

As the fatherless biracial child of a Mexican immigrant, Danny Donnelly was never expected to amount to much. Before the age of nine, his single mother had moved her seven children more than thirty times—from the impoverished streets of South Central Los Angeles to rural Oregon and everywhere in between.

Sometimes there was no home to go to, so they slept in their ’62 Chevy; sometimes dinner was a slice of bread; sometimes they showered in a nearby park. Desperate yet ever hopeful, they clung to the only thing they had—each other. Through it all, Danny longed for his father’s love and approval, ultimately channeling his pain and transforming himself into Zoro, one of the world’s greatest drummers.

Eloquent, hilarious, and remarkably tender, Maria’s Scarf: A Memoir of a Mother’s Love, a Son’s Perseverance, and Dreaming Big, tells the story of a family fighting for survival against almost insurmountable odds. Through laughter, tears, and many misadventures, Zoro touches the heart of every listener—young or old, citizen or immigrant—and speaks to the dreamer in all of us, emboldening everyone to live fantazmical lives.

Zoro’s life story is an inspiration for all of us to find our passion and live out our purpose—no matter the odds against us. Zoro does not portray he and his family as victims of poverty, but as those who overcame through perseverance, hard work, ingenuity and faith! His story reads like Forrest Gump’s. Zoro kept moving forward despite many setbacks. He kept believing and dreaming to become one of the greatest drummers of our times. It’s a wonderful book, read by Zoro himself.

Great tribute to his mother, his family and his friends. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it. A part of me wanted to reread it the day I finished it! Thank you Zoro for sharing your heart!

It was a bit long but, then again, there’s nothing I would have left out. I could feel the love and the respect. I could feel his pain. You made me cry. Do you know Danny you always were the richest person in the world? Do you know how many long for what you have? Maybe not living in your “White House” so much but the genuine love of people is what we all crave!

I read this book in 3 days and listened to the audio every night. Knowing Zoro from school, he was always cheerful you'd never know about the struggles at home. He is a true inspiration that if you believe in yourself you can overcome life's challenges. This story made me laugh and made me cry.
You can easily keep listening to "one more chapter". I wish I could give more than a 5 star rating.

Maria’s Scarf is a deeply moving and captivating memoir that traces the emotional journey of a young boy yearning for the love and presence of an absent father. Through the eyes of a young and largely innocent boy Zoro, we get a heartfelt narrative of resilience, love, and redemption.

And although there was a huge hole left there by an absent father, it was filled by the unwavering love and support of his mother Maria and friends he meets along the way who shared similar deficits.

Before reading this book, I only knew Zoro only as a famous drummer. This book gave me backstage access to the struggle and hard fought battles heard in the soul of his groove. Much like a seasoned blues singer, Zoro’s drumming and writing resonates with authenticity, weaving a story that is both raw and uplifting.

His innocence and sincerity shine through, making his incredible journey relatable and inspiring.

What sets this book apart is its powerful message of purpose beyond personal ambition. While many books motivate readers to strive for greatness, Maria’s Scarf goes further, by offering an alternative to the way to view success…in the form of surrender for the greater good of others. Ultimately, it empowered me to recognize that self-sacrifice holds greater value than personal achievement.

This book is a testament to the strength found in vulnerability and the transformative power of love. It left me inspired to not only be my best self but to live with intention and compassion for others like Maria did.

Maria’s Scarf is a must-read for anyone seeking a story of hope, healing, and lasting contentment.

A boy tries to prove his worth while his mother surrenders her dreams to give her children a chance to become great.

I couldn’t stop listening to this beautiful life story! I’d laugh and then I’d cry! It was wonderful to hear Zoro narrate his book and hear his emotions as he read about his mama. What a love he had for her and her for her children and family. So fun to hear about landmarks in a place I grew up at the very same time he did. Way to go Zoro!!! I'm going to listen to it again and again.

I purchased the book by accident, but thought I would give it a try. I was not disappointed, rather I was enthralled. It’s not just about Zoro. It is a history of America and music at a time of unprecedented change. It is a guide to young people who doubt themselves and a testimony of faith. Thanks Zoro for loving your mother and sharing your story.

A POWERFUL STORY THAT SHOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH, FAMILY, AND FRIENDS.
