Intorno a lei, gli altri cugini, Maria, Julia e Tom, capricciosi e viziati; due zie di cui una, la zia Norris, insopportabile e spesso offensiva nel rimarcare le umili origini della bambina, e il capofamiglia, il baronetto Sir Thomas Bertram, uomo di grande rigore e dignità, ma cieco alle reali esigenze affettive ed emotive dei figli.
A completare il quadro, i coniugi Grant e i loro parenti, gli spregiudicati e danarosi fratelli Crawford arrivati dalla capitale; il signor Rushworth e il signor Yates.
Nel corso del romanzo, Fanny Price si trasformerà da piccola Cenerentola del Regency a paladina dei principi morali di un’aristocrazia ormai in declino, minacciata dal lassismo dei costumi e dalla corruzione della città, rimanendo, comunque, sempre fedele ai suoi valori di onestà e altruismo.
