Three witches tell the Scottish General Macbeth that he will be king of Scotland. Encouraged by his wife, Macbeth kills the king, becomes the new king and kills more people out of paranoia. Civil war erupts to overthrow Macbeth, resulting in more death.

All of the Shakespeare plays within the Argo Classics catalogue are performed by the Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players. The Marlowe was founded in 1907 with a mission to focus on effective delivery of verse, respect the integrity of texts and rescue neglected plays by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and the less performed plays of Shakespeare himself. The Marlowe has performed annually at Cambridge Arts Theatre since its opening in 1936 and continues to produce some of the finest actors of their generations.

Thurston Dart, professor of music at London University and a fellow of Jesus College Cambridge, directed the music for this production.

Derek Jacob's readingbod Macbeth "tomorrow' solliquy gives such a unique vision on the catharsis. in my opinion, Jacobi 's Macbeth is almost resigned to the abject failure of his borrowed royal robes in the instant he leads of his wife's suicide. nbit instead of breaking down in misery like Othello over Desdemona, this Macbeth is numbed, and placid. it's enough to make one remember to never take the works of the Bard at face value: there are multiple cooperative and constructive perspectives!
