MAKIN' THE SCENE - A Living History

‘He’s been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
a poet, a pawn and a king.
He’s been up and down and over and out,
but he knows one thing:
Each time he finds himself … flat on his face,
He picks himself up and gets back in the race. …’
(from That’s Life © 1963 by Dean Kay & Kelly Gordon,
sung by Frank Sinatra, 1966)

International best-selling novelist Hugo N. Gerstl (Scribe, The Motherland Saga Quartet, Against All Odds) has been a non-fiction writer, Air Force officer, teacher, radio personality, substitute (unordained) Rabbi while stationed in Turkey for two years, pilot, actor, president of a small publishing house, editor, trial lawyer, musician, bandleader, and composer-arranger, who boasts co-publishing three hit records (Express Yourself, Love Land, Do Your Thing).

Now, he returns to his roots in the 1960s. In Makin’ the Scene, he self-describes himself as “White, Jewish, somewhat talented, and a participant in the early days of L.A. rock and roll.” Although he never quite made it to the big time, he rubbed elbows and worked with a legion of those who did – Charles Wright, his partner of many years, the Blossoms (the most recognized unknown “girl group” in the industry), the wonderful Glen Campbell, the inimitable – and ultimately tragic – Phil Spector, and a host of others.

Gerstl’s Makin’ the Scene reveals the amazing stories of a time in history like no other, the last gasp of a time before the computer, before the internet, when great music was created naturally, and when a group of unforgettable human beings made it happen. It’s all here, and you’ll love every page. Let the fun begin!
