Acerca de esta escucha
A haunting historical novella, Lowcountry Spirit tells the story of three slave girls with mystical powers living on an eerie island off the coast of Georgia whose lives intertwine in their quest for freedom.
Meet Emmaline, Celestia, and Liza, three slave girls on a haunted barrier island in Georgia low country. Emmaline is a mouthy, stubborn young woman who has magic in her blood and conjures the strongest spells with hardly any effort. Celestia was ten when her mother was sold and taken from the island. She's never stopped longing for her, even when the talking chain - a verbal underground railroad - sends word that her mother has been taken to a plantation in North Carolina. By the time she turns sixteen, she can no longer bring her mother's face to mind, but she can still hear her urging Celestia to be thankful and keep safe. Liza was a birthday gift to the plantation's mistress. Her mama was killed for throwing a spell on her master. Before she died, she gave Liza her book of conjures so she could protect herself.
When Liza hatches a plan for all three of them to escape, the three girls' lives collide. What they don't realize is that their chances of successfully escaping are slim and the possibility that all three will die before they leave the island is far more likely.

Jubilee tells the true story of Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress. Vyry bears witness to the South's antebellum opulence and to its brutality, its wartime ruin, and the promises of Reconstruction. Weaving her own family's oral history with 30 years of research, Margaret Walker's novel brings the everyday experiences of slaves to light. Jubilee churns with the hunger, the hymns, the struggles, and the very breath of American history.

When a 70-year-old woman finds a five-year-old girl abandoned on her doorstep, she is thrust into a sorrowful past that can only be conquered with the help of the girl who opened her memory - the very girl she is trying to save. This first novel, according to author Jacquelyn Mitchard, is one of "exquisite power, honesty, and conviction...quite nearly without flaws."

The Stantons and the Nortons were families in the truest, oldest sense: extended networks of kin stretching across the mountains, everyone within hiking distance. They’d come from the British Isles and settled in the Appalachians of North Carolina during the 1700s, bringing with them their dearly loved songs and their clannish ways, their ties to the land ultimately becoming as strong as their ties to one another.

This is the story of an extraordinary friendship between two remarkable women, both caught in the shadow of slavery in the 19th-century South. One is an escaped black slave under sentence of death; the other is white, yet committed to end the horrors her neighbors accept as a matter of course. Ruby Dee's passionate and sensitive readings gives a poignant sense of reality to this magnificent novel of courage, daring and love.

Historia
A ballet star loses everything when a car accident ends her career and also results in her miscarriage. Devastated, she retreats to the Georgia coast, where her seclusion does not last long, thanks to the gentle influence of the marsh/river folk--their traditions, music and beliefs. Befriended by a lonely little girl, the former ballerina slowly finds a new life for herself and new values. Mainly female voices, ranging from a light, sophisticated southern accent to a more earthy coastal drawl.
