Manassas, 1861. Seventeen-year-old Martha Patterson has always defied expectations. While other girls her age dream of society balls and advantageous marriages, Martha finds solace and purpose in the raw beauty of her family’s Virginia horse farm. Tall, strong, and possessing an uncanny gift with horses, she’s more comfortable in the saddle than in a corset—a fact that often draws her mother’s disapproval but earns her father’s quiet pride.

But Martha’s unconventional life shatters in an instant when the Civil War crashes onto their doorstep. Confederate soldiers, ruthless and unyielding, storm their farm, confiscating their prize broodmares and brutally killing Martha’s beloved new foal, a symbol of her future and her father’s dreams.he major’s chilling warning—"This place will be a battleground by high noon"—leaves them no choice. With their home destroyed and their livelihood stolen, Martha, her parents, and the few hidden horses are forced into a desperate flight west.

Their destination: the distant, perilous Oregon Trail.

Stripped of everything familiar, Martha must rely on her innate strength and the pistol her father pressed into her hand. As Martha navigates the brutal realities of frontier life and the ever-present shadow of war, she discovers a resilience she never knew she possessed.
Will her unique skills and fierce determination be enough to protect her family and forge a new life in the untamed West? Amidst the relentless struggle for survival, can a woman who has lost so much open her heart to the possibility of love?
...and over 700 - FIVE STAR REVIEWS - SEVERAL FOLLOW!

... and the quality of writing is good- far better than so much out there these days. I do not give 5 stars lightly
I'm off now to find out what else this author wrote- I'd like another episode, or a follow-up on some of these characters, maybe. If you like westerns, have the slightest interest in knowing what coming across the country was like back then, or even just like a western romance, I recommend you check out this book.
This book will keep you hooked from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves The Oregon Trail, or that period of Western civilization. The writer made you feel every trial and triumph they had. The strength of the folks back in those days was remarkable, both women and men alike. I hope this writer does more books on the trail, I'm an avid Oregon Trail reader.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Loved how 6 women traveled by wagon across country to follow their dreams. Thank you Allen Kelly, can't wait for the next book.

This book kept me up a few nights wanting to learn about all the people on the wagon train. There were adventures and heart ache, love and loss. I will be looking for more from this author. I am sure she will get better the longer she writes and I want to watch her grow.

I really enjoyed this story of the Oregon Trail with what I felt were authentic details. Anyone with an interest in the old West, specifically the Oregon Trail, would like this book. It follows the story of 6 women - all with a past - heading for a new life. The story is very long, but it never flags. It is a story of what happens every day, the good and the bad, on the trail. I got caught up in the lives of these women, the men they meet, the life and death situations they face, and all the colorful characters they encounter. The Virtual Voice is not too bad. I pretty much overlooked the occasional flaws.

Amazing Story filled with Details of the Old West
