This is a story that we could call “the story” of Italy, without exaggeration. It is so because of what happens and what will happen afterwards, and because of all the peculiarities and intertwining threads, and the names, which start fifty years ago and echo in recent history. This story is very simple and straightforward, even if it is tangled up in a knot that is difficult to untangle; you need a starting point and then you have to pull the thread. But it is also possible to start from any point in this story and then continue. So I will start with two parallel stories of two people who may never have met, even by chance, but the end of one will be the destiny and the end of the other. But it is important to start at the beginning of their lives, because that beginning will be an essential part of their end. ... Eight years later, two men who were so different yet so similar, united by a common sense of country and collective interest, died for this. They were united by a country that too often fails to pursue the truth about its own history with tenacity, leaving its best men alone even when they fight for the common good in mechanisms too big for individuals. In the middle of their lives, and in the years between 1962 and 1970, the history of Italy unfolds, and above all, events take place that will shape its future and, above all, write a history that, based on this reconstruction, is likely to be profoundly rewritten. This investigation was not “intentional”. It is in some ways the result of chance - while I was working on something completely different, I came across facts and documents of a completely different nature. Nevertheless, after much reflection, I felt that this was a “story worth telling” and that everything that “can be said” [beyond the much more that could be added] should be told. We owe it to the memory of two exceptional Italians, and even more to the work they did for us.
