The one book that helped my husband become aware of his schizophrenia

Marcel Armstrong accomplished what very very very few individuals suffering with schizophrenia cannot — communicate to the baffled lay public about his inner worlds in a way that is relatable and compelling.

A Harvard graduate - it is obvious from the get go that this is a very intelligent man. He narrates from a first person perspective his experience of slowly losing touch with reality.

I listened to this audiobook two times over while my husband was in the grips of a two year non stop psychotic episode. No one could help me. I called every single crisis line on island, apparently there is only help for people that are about to commit suicide, or abused wives that want help leaving their abusive husband. No help whatsoever for family members trying to help a family member with schizophrenia get help. Our family was terrified and blamed it all on his drinking. Police could not help - the most they could do was transport him to the emergency room. Medical professionals were legally barred from helping without his expressed consent which he was entirely unable to give because he was terrified and angry all the time. Think of a grandparent in the late stages of dementia, now think of the world turning their backs on your family saying tough luck, you’re on your own. That’s what it felt like. I had two young kids. I was growing desperate and running out of options for my husband.

One night as my husband was staring out the window with a grimace, worried about the demons in the clouds, and communicating with Planet X (and it’s apparent many live moons with his thoughts) - I suggested he listen to living thoughts because it was someone that had had the same/similar types of experiences. Knowing that there might be one person in the world that might understand him (after two years of bashing his head against the wall trying to convince the world of all the revelations that kept popping into his mind each day and having people dismiss him as crazy) was enough to motivate my husband to listen to this audio book on one of his walks.

After finishing the book - he said very little. Just that he could relate to a few things Marcel has described.

Then through the next few months - he kept mentioning periodically elements of the book. I could tell that the story really stuck with him and gave him perspective on how his own reality might be unraveling.

Fast forward two years, after many more trials and challenges, my husband is successfully medicated and able to live his life at 95% of his original capacity. He’s still often scared to go out of the house, but he no longer gets rageful, no longer trashes our home, no longer obsessed over conspiracy theories he watches on you tube. He is kind and rational again. He is able to be a good father to our two young sons and he can actually sleep again.

I know that this book “Living Thoughts” played a major role in helping him find his way back to the real world and urge every family member struggling to get help for their loved ones with serious mental illness to listen to this book.

Absolutely beautiful

Someone close to me might be affected by the experiences described by the author and while we've been slowly working on our path to understanding, this book has been extremely revealing. I wanna thank the author for all the work they did for this book and I'm sorry to anyone for the way the world can be unkind. Hope this book helps you as I'm sure it will us.

helped me remember

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia too. It took 5 yrs to diagnose me. I had the same thought process as you. Thinking others could read my inner most private thoughts; etc. After going to treatment center for a court ordered 3 months I vowed to never return. Medication worked for me with weight gain side effects too. I'm on a vegetarian diet to combat other illnesses from occurring-- I recommend! My psychosis was about Copyright. I was a designer so everything was very creative in nature. I too, thought people resembled people from my past -- resolving issues I had with them. Your book reminded me of all I went through during those 5 yrs. For me the problems with my mind would subside with exercise -- cycled 40 miles a day to stop the voices. I was exhausted!!! Doing better now, 3 yrs after medication. You can regain your life again if you stay on them. I take fluphenazine -- which offers me a clear head. Use to be on resperidole but it made me sleepy all day. Wishing you all the best. Thanks for sharing your story. Exercise and eat healthy -- enjoy your new life.
