Lady Lily McNeil is the only daughter of Laird Clancy McNeil. She knows that her father is trying to unite the clans against a possible invasion by King Charles the first of England. What she does not know is that Laird Jonathan McCrea has approached her father with a proposal that his son, Jamie and Lily should marry, to strengthen the unity of their two clans. Laird McNeil agrees, reluctantly. He has always doted on Lily, but he cannot take the chance of offending Laird McCrea, and the excuse that she is too young is no longer viable; Lily just turned eighteen. So, Laird McNeil and Laird McCrea draw up and sign a marriage agreement. When Lily is told, she fails to change her father's mind. However, she is having none of it and determines to do whatever she can to have the marriage agreement dissolved. She likes her life just as it is; living at home with her mother and father and training her horse Finn. She has no wish to marry anyone, especially a complete stranger.
Jamie is also very much against the marriage. He has his own ideas of how to avoid war with England and a wife would be a handicap for him at the moment. Also, his father had told him that Laird McNeil doted on his only daughter. Jamie reasoned that she was probably so spoiled that she would expect him to cater to her every wish. Jamie could not think of anything more distasteful.
