Over the past three decades, Life in the Fast Lane has grown to become universally recognised as the definitive firsthand account of Formula 1’s most turbulent year; the most disputed season in the history of the sport.

Back in 1994, on my writing its opening page, I never set out to achieve this accolade, merely the gigantic, tumultuous events of that year continued to unfolded before my eyes, and I wrote them down exactly as they happened.

Once published, this book changed the course of my entire life, taking me from the oft tempestuous pit lanes of grand prix motor racing to a twenty-five-year broadcasting career with network television in America.

Life in the Fast Lane has remained in continuous publication throughout these past thirty years; with original hardback editions often exchanging hands for many hundreds of dollars within the book collectors’ market. Flattering to a degree, and I hold no issue with the currency of these valuable first copies, beyond an ardent desire to offer my readers a newly jacketed, affordable edition to mark the book’s thirtieth birthday.

I’ve always believed that Life in the Fast Lane speaks for itself, and at this stage of its long service the story needs little introduction. Accordingly, the cover of this 30th Anniversary Edition features nothing but a simple background of genuine Formula 1 carbon, along with the very gloves I wore during every pit stop of 1994. Their burns and scorch marks result from the terrible Hockenheim inferno; the softness of the leather clearly revealing the lines and contours of my hands within. The indelible history of these two aged gloves bares witness, and I lay them before you now as I believe they say all that needs to be said: I was there; I witnessed everything; and I could not have been closer to the heat of battle.

Life in the Fast Lane is very meaningful to me; its clarion message remains inviolate to all who choose to hear it, and my sincere desire is for this special volume to stay with you for many years to come. Lest we forget.
