With a Universe-wide respect for all living things, and all potential living things, the Compact (alien) people are appalled by the terraforming of the Humans' colony planet, Azureign, and what new life it might have destroyed. It was too late to recover what might have been, but the Compact sets out to teach Humanity a lesson.

Azureign is put under interdiction: no contact with anyone but the few Compact aliens who enforce the interdiction. What do the colonists now have to do to survive?

In this set of five novels, we experience the Helper animals created to assist the colonists. We learn how Compact aliens may have interfered with political systems, upsetting the various colonists' governments. The Humans slowly come to see, over the course of their millennium-long interdiction, how they are being manipulated. Can they overcome the harassment by a few Compact species, and join forces with the nicer ones to save Azureign's colony?
